Laptops in the Classroom..."A Blessing or a Curse!?"

During the 2009-2010 School Year, Vance County Schools were awarded by the Golden Leaf Foundation funding to plan, design, and launch a Technology Initiative that would provide every high school student a Dell Laptop for instructional purposes. The laptops serve as a tool to enhance classroom instruction and student achievement. As a district, we are now approaching our third laptop deployment and preparing for our third academic school year of usage of the laptops in the classrooms.

"A BLESSING OR A CURSE"!

Question?: What do you think? In your opinion..."From a holistic view and approach, has the Innovate Program/ 1:1 Technology Initiative been a Blessing or a Curse for you and your students?"

Nothing serious..(smile)...just would like to know what you think!

  1. It can be both. A blessing when used effectively and efficiently by the instructor as well as the students. The instructor has to be comfortable and believe in the initiative for it to be a success. When the expectation is that the laptops will and should be used to enhance instruction then students generally will follow suit. A curse when it's just that of as "something else we're giving this kids to tear up". When an instructor and/or student views it as a negative or hinderance (sp), then so will be the outcome. Laptop can work and have in other counties and cities. They work well in classrooms, here. It's about approach, expectation levels and a positive attitude.

  2. I think it is a very positive asset in the classroom; however, the students tend to abuse it. The students seem to adhere to the rules as long as you are standing over top of them. Other than that, instructional wise they are great!
